Summary Statement of Duties:
Under the direction of the MHS Division Engineer, assists in the supervision of the Authority's bridge and tunnel inspection program within the Metropolitan Highway System with emphasis on the Central Artery elements. Performs engineering duties related to the inspection, design, construction, review and repair of bridges, tunnels, buildings, and related facilities and as directed by the Division Engineer.
Duties include, but are not limited to, maintaining and administering the Division's inspection program; oversight of the inspection of bridges, tunnels, and facilities; preparation of reports in accordance with requirements of the National Bridge Inspections Standards (NBIS). Incumbents of this level will assign, direct, and supervise the work of the applicable inspection teams.
Minimum Requirements:
Education:
Must have a B.S. degree in Civil /Structural Engineering or a related engineering discipline from an accredited college or university.
Experience:
Must have at least five (5) years of experience in civil engineering of which at least three (3) years of experience must have been in bridge or structural engineering.
Must have a minimum five (5) years of bridge inspection experience and have successfully completed an FHWA approved comprehensive bridge inspection training course.
One year of experience in the operation of Autocad design software is preferred.
Knowledge of properties and characteristics of materials associated with highway, bridge and tunnel construction, such as steel, concrete and asphalt.
Knowledge of health and safety practices and procedures followed in bridge and tunnel inspection.
Knowledge and skill in the types and uses of personal protection, safety equipment used in bridge/tunnel inspection, and the MUTCD.
Experienced in the use of standard PC based application software including, but not limited to, the use of databases and digital cameras.
License:
Must be registered, or eligible to register, as a Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Must have a valid Massachusetts class D motor vehicle license.
Physical:
Must be capable of performing all duties referred to in this description.
Must be able to carry various equipment including ladders.
Must be self motivated and be able to work with minimal supervision.
Must be able to work scheduled and unscheduled overtime.
Must be experienced in the use of standard PC based application software.
