Spectacle Island

Spectacle Island, a former City of Boston landfill and a source of environmental contamination in Boston Harbor, was dramatically transformed through the efforts of several Central Artery/Tunnel Project construction contracts. Over 3.7 million cubic yards of material dug up as part of CA/T Project construction were first placed on the 121-acre island.  The landfill site was then capped and closed.  Two beaches, five miles of accessible trails, a pier and over 28,000 trees, shrubs and vines were installed.  Construction of a fully accessible ferry ramp system, berthing docks and a visitors' center were completed in time for the island's opening. The island - operated jointly by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation and the City of Boston - is a major focal point within the Boston Harbor Islands National Park Area.
