Carpool Program

The carpool program encourages ride sharing and the use of high occupancy vehicles. As an incentive to "ride share," the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority offers discounts to motorists who travel with three or more people in their passenger vehicles while traveling on the Turnpike.

Commuter groups of three or more using the MassPike and the Sumner/Callahan Tunnels are eligible to participate in the FAST LANE Carpool Program. Carpool registrants receive a discount on the regular price of daily tolls, and are responsible for paying this discounted carpool fee plus a one-time FAST LANE transponder fee (Fee Schedule). This transponder is valid 24 hours a day, seven days a week, provided there are three or more passengers in the vehicle.

Please Note: Commercial vehicles, business vehicles and motorcycles are not eligible for the Carpool Program.

Please Note - Effective January 1, 2008, all participants in the Carpool Program will need to apply or re-qualify in person at one of our FAST LANE Service Center locations.  All applications and renewals must be accompanied by a current registration certificate and lease agreement, if applicable, a valid drivers license and a valid credit card.  When renewing, you must also bring your current carpool transponder.

Annual FAST LANE Tunnel Communities Resident Program

Transponders for the Annual FAST LANE Tunnel Communities Resident Program may only be purchased and used by residents who reside in East Boston, South Boston, or the North End. You are not authorized to use this transponder if you are not an eligible resident.  In order to qualify for the Tunnel Communities Resident Program, the following requirements must be met: 

* You must be a resident of East Boston, South Boston, or the North End (valid zip codes are 02128, 02127, 02210, 02109, 02113, 02110 and 02114)

* You must have a privately owned 2-axle 4-tire passenger vehicle, no commercial vehicles are allowed.

When applying for the program, you must present the following items to the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority customer service representative:

* A current Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles registration certificate and lease agreement, if applicable, for each registered vehicle.

* A current Massachusetts driver's license.

* Proof of residency covering the past ninety (90) days (i.e. utility statement, telephone statement, bank statement or credit card statement).

Important Program Information: 

* Effective January 2008, all participants in the Tunnel Communities Resident Program will need to re-qualify on an annual basis in order to remain in the program.  Notices with instructions will be mailed out prior to the renewal date.  Failure to re-qualify will result in the loss of privileges and/or fines. 

* The unauthorized use of this transponder may subject you to certain fines, penalties and/or removal from the program in accordance with the provisions of the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority's regulations or those of other jurisdictions. 

* Participating in the FAST LANE Tunnel Communities Resident Program does not authorize use of the South Boston Haul Road. 

* If you cancel your account or move out of the authorized resident area, you must contact the FAST LANE service center at 1-877-MASSPIKE (877-627-7745).

Tunnel Communities Resident Program applications are only processed at the Tunnel Administration Building during the hours noted below:

Tobin Bridge Resident Permit Discount Program

Qualified residents of Charlestown and Chelsea can use the Tobin Memorial Bridge for a discounted toll of $0.30. In order to qualify for the Program, the following requirements must be met:

  • You must be a resident of Charlestown or Chelsea to be eligible.
  • Your vehicle registration must show a Charlestown or Chelsea address.
  • Your vehicle must be a privately-owned or leased passenger vehicle. If your vehicle is leased you must have your lease agreement with the owner's name.
  • Your resident discount application must be accompanied by copies of your driver's license, your automobile registration, another proof of residency, and a copy of your car lease agreement (if applicable).
